Police divers recovered the body of an eight-year-old child from a farm dam near Odendaalsrus on Tuesday.
Captain Rosa Benade said police divers from Welkom were called earlier in the day to help with a search for the eight-year-old child on the farm Weltevrede in the Odendaalsrus district.
”The body was found in the farm dam at a depth of 2m,” she said.
Benade said Tuesday’s incident was one of various drowning incidents in the northern Free State since Sunday.
”As part of Operation Striker — an ongoing crime-prevention operation on the Goldfields — police patrolled a dam on the premises of the Freddie’s Mine Shaft and discovered a body on August 20.”
Benade said the body of a 28-year-old man was discovered but police were still trying to establish his identity.
In another incident near Bothaville a woman (34) was reported missing on by her next of kin on Monday.
Police were called out and divers found the body of the woman the same day in the Vals River between Kroonstad and Bothaville.
Benade said with the upcoming summer season in mind police want to warn parents and children to be wary around waterways.
”They should not be negligent, especially if they reside near the proximity of water reservoirs or dams,” she said. — Sapa
