Khwezi Community Radio won two awards for best radio feature and best community media in the KwaZulu-Natal Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards on Friday evening.
Zwelandile Ngidi from Khwezi Community Radio shared the best radio feature award for his report on Nelson Mandela’s birthday with Ncumisa Mafunda from SABC Radio News for her focus on 12 years of freedom in South Africa.
Mntomuhle Mandla Khwela, also from Khwezi Radio, received the best community media award for an account of the lives of disabled journalists.
Morgan Collins of Highway Radio won best radio news while Meleni Moses of East Coast Radio was the only nomination for the Editor’s Choice award.
The best print news award went to Fred Kockott from the Sunday Tribune for his exposure of corruption while Kerry Cullinan from Health E-news won best print feature for a piece on the benefits of herbal remedies in the fight against Aids.
Tony Carnie from the The Mercury won best columnist while Nanda Soobben was named best cartoonist.
E.tv reporters Vanessa Govender and McIntosh Nzimande won the award for best general news in television and Ida Jooste of SABC2 Fokus won best television feature for her portrayal of the new struggle of poverty and unemployment.
No entries were received in the photography, sports and economic categories in KwaZulu-Natal.
