A countrywide Shoprite Checkers strike on Monday continued into its 48th day with no settlement to the workers’ disputes in sight, the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union (Saccawu) said.
”There’s nothing much happening at the moment,” Michael Pau, Saccawu’s national chairperson, said.
Saccawu still demand an increase of R300 or 10%, but Shoprite Checkers have yet to move from its offer of R265.
”We are still demanding a wage of R2 500 per worker per month, but the company [Shoprite Checkers] is only prepared to offer R1 850.”
In addition to the wage increase, 32 000 strikers are also demanding better working conditions.
”We are demanding uniforms for workers and an allowance for the washing of the uniforms, medical checkups for those working in health hazard areas and free transport for late trading hours,” said Pau.
Shoprite Checkers said that there were no new developments at this time. — Sapa
