Zim unionists in SA hospital after Harare beatings

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) vice-president Lucia Matibenga and a colleague, who suffered police beatings last week, have been admitted to the trauma unit of a Gauteng clinic, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said on Thursday.

The labour federation’s general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, announced this at Cosatu’s congress at Midrand, explaining that they had been scheduled to address the gathering.

”We suspect that Lucia’s arm may be cracked and she may have trouble with her kidneys,” he said.

They were allegedly beaten up after their arrest before the scheduled start of a demonstration in Harare.
