SA Rugby in bid to defuse franchise row

Top SA Rugby officials are to meet the three Southern and Eastern Cape unions soon to find a solution to an ongoing franchise dispute, Dispatch Online reported on Wednesday.

The SA Rugby delegation will comprise president Oregan Hoskins, vice-presidents Mike Stofile and Koos Basson and chairperson Mveleli Ncula.

Hoskins told the Daily Dispatch on Tuesday it was vital for SA Rugby and the squabbling rugby administrators find a solution to the current dispute.

The Cape High Court granted SA Rugby leave on Tuesday to appeal against an earlier judgement that cleared the way for the Southern Spears to play in next year’s Super 14 competition.

Judge Dennis Davis said there was a ”reasonable prospect” that the Supreme Court of Appeal would come to a different finding.

An appeal could take months and is widely expected to further delay the Spears’ entry into the Super 14 arena.

Hoskins said the meeting with the unions was due to take place earlier but had to be postponed because not all executives were available.

”I am only in rugby for one thing, and that is rugby. I do not have any other agenda and if there are people in rugby with other agendas it would be very sad. I hope and pray that for the good of rugby we find a solution,” he said.

”We are still committed to the Spears. All we have been saying is that Spears is not yet ready to play in the Super 14.” — Sapa
