Korea missed a great chance to top Pool B when they drew 0-0 against South Africa in the Women’s World Cup field hockey tournament in Madrid, Spain, on Thursday.
Korea’s forwards had their opponents’ defence under siege for most of the first half, but Jen Wilson, playing her 100th match for South Africa was inspirational as she kept running into the Korean build-up and creating errors.
Korea failed to build on their territory and penalty corner advantage and South Africa were pleased to have a clean sheet at the break.
Despite using a curious mix of zone and person marking, South Africa made no progress once they had the ball due to Korea’s recovery speed.
After the break Korea increased the pressure and had South Africa pinned in their half. But the Asians began to fade in the hot conditions and had to be content with a stalemate after their 2-1 win against Japan on Wednesday.
South Africa coach Jenny King was pleased with their first point after their 1-0 loss against Australia.
”I’m pleased with our first point in the event although no goals in two games is a concern,” said King.
”Our defence today [Thursday] was outstanding but we gave the ball away too easily.” — AFP
