Cash-heist suspect commits suicide, say police

One of the four men arrested in connection with the shoot-out between police and robbers in a cash-in-transit heist in central Johannesburg committed suicide on Thursday, police said.

Senior Superintendent Mary Martins Engelbrecht said the 25-year-old suspect was travelling with police on Thursday morning to KwaZulu-Natal as part of the investigation.

”The detectives stopped at filling station in Greytown at about 6.30am,” said Engelbrecht.

Two of the three detectives had got out the car to refuel. The man, who was sitting in the back seat, grabbed one of the detective’s guns.

”He allegedly shot himself and died at the scene,” Engelbrecht said.

The Independent Complaints Directorate was investigating.

The three other men who were arrested on Wednesday were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

One of the men were found at Jeppe Hostel shortly after 10am on Wednesday while the remaining three were apprehended in Joubert Park soon afterwards.

A white Isuzu bakkie believed to have been the men’s getaway car in Tuesday’s cash-in-transit heist was confiscated.
