A wage agreement between Shoprite Checkers employees and management has ended a three-month countrywide strike, the retail chain said on Thursday.
The company concluded the strike with a three-year wage deal with the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union (Saccawu) on Wednesday evening, said Callie Burger, the Shoprite group’s personnel director.
He said the agreement stipulated an 8,54% increase of salaries of full and part-time employees.
Full-time employee could expect an increase of R280 this year and further increases of R10 for the following two years, Burger said.
Hourly rates for part-time employees also increased.
Shoprite undertook to provide company uniforms and revise the staff discount.
During September negotiations, Saccawu demanded an increase of R300 or 10% with a minimum salary of R2 500.
Shoprite tabled a R265 pay hike.
”The company’s position from the onset of the dispute was that settlement would only be reached through good-faith negotiations based on compromise and flexibility and was pleased that this stance had now been vindicated by last night’s settlement,” Burger said.
