Two metro trains crash in Rome, dozens hurt

Two trains on Rome’s underground metro system collided on Tuesday and as many 60 people were reported injured, some of them seriously.

One report said some passengers were still trapped underground.

Atac, the Rome metro operator, confirmed reports of the crash at Piazza Vittorio underground station in the city centre but could not provide any more details on the extent of the damage or injuries.

Sky Italia television said about 60 people may have been injured, some of them seriously.

A witness said overhead beams of the station collapsed when one train rammed into the rear of another.

A Sky reporter said a number of people spattered with blood were seen leaving the station while others were still trapped down below. There were also reports that a electrical panel exploded when the trains crashed. – Reuters
