A Pretoria man who was stabbed in the chest after becoming involved in a fight at a city high school was in a stable and satisfactory condition in hospital on Tuesday.
Pretoria Academic Hospital spokesperson Freedah Kobo said Motheti Madityana (29) was recovering after the incident in which he was stabbed on Monday.
”He had stab wounds in his left chest,” she said, adding that he did not need to undergo an operation.
Police said that no arrests were made in the case.
The stabbing happened during a fight that began inside the gates of Lyttelton Manor High School on Monday.
It ended with Madityana suffering stab wounds, allegedly inflicted by a grade nine pupil. He was said to be the brother of one of the pupils who attend the school.
The Pretoria News reported that grade eight and grade nine children who saw the incident said the fight had been building up since last Thursday when a group of 14 children began fighting.
A grade 10 boy, who asked not to be named, said the fight continued on Friday, with two of the boys threatening to ”hurt and kill” a grade eight pupil. The arguments were over money and drugs.
The boy who was threatened was pushed to the ground by at least five other pupils on Monday. ”They were hitting and kicking him and the boy’s brother [Madityana] ran over to help,” said the eyewitness.
As he tried to pull his brother free he was stabbed.
A parent, Tina Molokwane, who was driving home after collecting her son said: ”I saw the man fall and then several boys jumped on him before one of them stabbed him as he lay on the ground.”
The attackers ran off when she stopped. — Sapa
