Bucs bamboozled by goal of the season

If Orlando Pirates claim their 2-1 defeat to Benoni Premier United at a rain-swept Germiston Stadium on Sunday afternoon came from a succession of freakish elements, there is no doubt it was inspired by what can already be called the PSL goal of the season.

Pirates were leading 1-0 through a seventh minute goal from 19-year-old prodigy Excellent Walaza in his Premier League debut and then United’s Katlego Loke stepped onto the scene. He began a dizzying run from the halfway line that spreadeagled no fewer than six Buccaneers’ defenders before angling the ball into the corner of the net.

It seemed to be a replica of the legendary goal scored by Maradona against England during the 1978 World Cup.

Sello Mhlembi headed the winning goal in the 53rd minute through a maze of misplaced Pirates defenders. The nails in Pirates’ coffin were hammered home in the 62nd minute when Cavan Sibeko received a red card for a late tackle.

Substitute Benedict Vilakazi was fortunate not to be red carded after outragously feigning a foul in an effort to be awarded a non-existent penalty — then proceeding to argue the point vehemently when his ploy was exposed. – Sapa
