Wanderers to take firm action against racial abuse

The Gauteng Cricket Board announced on Friday that it would take firm action against any spectator guilty of racial abuse during the tours by India and Pakistan.

Chief executive Alan Kourie said that following incidents of racial abuse reported from Australia, the board had decided to pay careful attention to the situation at matches at the Wanderers.

”We of course support the principle that sport is a game of unity and such incidents will not be tolerated,” said Kourie.

”While we would like to thank our supporters for their impeccable behaviour in the past, it is important to let the public know that current measures to discourage any such incidents have been bolstered for the upcoming tours of India and Pakistan and for all future events to be held at the Wanderers Stadium.

”Should any spectator be reported for racial abuse to players, management or supporters during the upcoming matches, that person will be evicted from the stadium.

”If the circumstances warrant any further action a charge will be laid and legal action taken against that person.

”We hope that no such actions would be necessary in a stadium that prides itself on world-class cricket,” Kourie said. — Sapa
