Fire delays flights at Cape Town airport

A fire at Cape Town International Airport on Sunday morning delayed some flights but caused no injuries, the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) said.

The fire started in the kitchen of News Café in the international terminal at 8.15am, said Acsa spokesperson Deidre Hendricks. The cause of the fire was not known and no injuries were reported.

Passengers and staff were evacuated while a rescue team doused the flames.

”The evacuation resulted in the delay of two international departures,” Hendricks said.

George Uriesi, general manager of the airport, said: ”Acsa deeply regrets the delay in the processing of passengers as a result of this incident, but the safety of airport users is always our first priority.”

A mop-up operation delayed other flights at the airport.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was also launched, Hendricks said. — Sapa
