Night on Earth, Jim Jarmusch, 1991, USA

A hip and hilarious comedy.The action takes place in five cities in one night, with a brilliant cast of cabbies and customers. The stories, stretching from sunset to sunrise, range form the ridiculous to the sublime, punctuated by a haunting theme song by Tom Waits. Jarmusch’s most accessible movie, and a film to cherish.

La vie est belle, Mweze Ngongura, 1986, Democratic Republic of Congo

The trials and the tribulations of two men, a wealthy employer and his servant, both in love with the same woman. Kourou (played by Papa Wemba), a rural boy who wants to be musician, and his employer compete, thus the stage is set for a comedy of errors in the two men’s quest to win the hand of the beautiful Kabibi.

Basquiat, Julian Schabel, 1996, USA

In 1981, Jean-Michel Basquiat became the darling of New York’s art critics. This film gives a dramatised account of his life of sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll which led to his demise. The film features music by The Pogues, Iggy Pop, Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel and David Bowie.
