ANC could lose Beaufort West

The African National Congress could lose control of the Beaufort West municipality because of the resignation of councillor Truman Prince, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Tuesday.

His departure paved the way for a coalition between the Independent Civic Organisation of SA (Icosa), the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Independent Democrats (ID).

According to the SABC, the resignation of Prince, who represented Icosa, was the DA’s prerequisite to dissolve its partnership with the ANC and form a new coalition.

The move would reportedly be concluded at a special council meeting on Wednesday and could be echoed in the Central Karoo municipality.

Prince is still waiting for leave to appeal his suspension as the municipal manager of the Central Karoo district municipality while he was still a member of the ANC.

He maintains he was unlawfully suspended at the insistence of ANC officials.

A coalition in Beaufort West could be echoed in the Central Karoo municipality.

ANC Western Cape secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha said the planned coalition indicated dishonesty on the part of the DA and its unprincipled way of doing things. – Sapa
