Jo’burg cops to remove street beggars

Johannesburg metro police intend removing beggars from traffic intersections, Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said on Thursday.

”I don’t know when, but we will remove beggars all over the Johannesburg area,” Minnaar said.

He said they will load the beggars in a metro police bus and take them to the traffic department.

Illegal immigrants will be sent to the Lindela repatriation centre. The homeless South Africans will be told that what they are doing is wrong according to city bylaws, and released.

”We can’t charge them because what they are doing is not a serious crime,” Minnaar said.

He said metro police will make an announcement on when the operation would be carried out. — Sapa
