Convicted robber and ”people’s poet” Mzwakhe Mbuli has appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assaulting his wife, the Daily Sun reported on Friday.
Mbuli (47) allegedly grabbed his wife, Doris, by her shirt and dragged her for a few metres when she refused to give him her car keys on Wednesday. She called police after the incident and Mbuli was arrested.
On Thursday, Mbuli’s defence asked the court to release him on a warning, but it was not granted.
However, he was granted bail of R2 000 on condition that he did not make direct or indirect contact with his wife. He also has to inform the clerk of the court if he intends leaving Soweto.
The court heard that Mbuli had a previous court order against him for domestic violence.
Mbuli was found guilty in 1997 of stealing R15 000 from a bank in Pretoria. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison. In 1999 he was convicted on another charge of armed robbery and possession of a hand grenade. He was released on parole in 2003, after having served five years of his sentence.
He is due back in court on January 16. — Sapa
