Aviation authority workers suspend strike

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) workers suspended their strike over bonuses pending an arbitrator’s ruling on the matter, the South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) said on Wednesday.

In a meeting on Monday, Satawu and the CAA had agreed to accept the ruling of a private arbitrator, said Satawu spokesperson Ronnie Mamba. In light of this, the union could not continue striking, he said.

CAA workers embarked on industrial action last week after being told they would receive their bonuses only at the end of the financial year in March.

They demanded the immediate payment of 15% of their bonuses.

Mamba emphasised that the dispute was not over money, but management’s lack of consultation with workers and its ”unilateral” decision-making about their money. — Sapa
