The police are searching for a security guard who shot dead a Pick ‘n Pay manager and a taxi driver at the Workshop shopping centre in Durban on Thursday night.
Captain Gugu Sabela said the uniformed security guard from Siza Security was on duty at the Pick ‘n Pay store at the shopping centre in Commercial Road in central Durban when he demanded money from a manager at about 7.30pm.
”He shot him and fled from the scene,” said Sabela.
”He had a shotgun and a pistol and he used the pistol.”
The manager died on the scene.
The security guard escaped with an undisclosed amount of money and went to the Pine Street rank for meter taxis, shot dead a taxi driver, then hijacked a taxi from another driver and fled. The second driver was not injured.
The robber drove off in the stolen taxi and crashed into another vehicle nearby. He then fled on foot.
ER24 paramedic Fazela Sahib confirmed that both the taxi driver and the manager were pronounced dead on the scene.
She said traumatised Pick ‘n Pay staff were taken to McCord hospital for counselling.
Sahib said people in the vehicle which the robber crashed into at the corner of Pine and Grey Streets were not seriously injured.
