Twenty-one awaiting-trial prisoners escaped from police cells in the North West province on Sunday night.
Police spokesperson Captain Elsabe Augoustides said on Monday that the prisoners had overpowered police officers at Lehurutshe, between Zeerust and Groot Marico, who had inspected the police cells at about 6pm.
Some prisoners had been arrested for serious crimes and Augoustides appealed to anyone with any information to contact their nearest police station.
