New SA Rugby MD to start next week

SA Rugby has announced that the newly appointed managing director, Jonathan Stones, is scheduled to take up his new position on January 15.

Confirming the news of the appointment, board chairperson Mpumelelo Tshume said he was pleased to welcome to SA Rugby a businessman of Stones’s calibre, and that he was confident the professional arm of rugby would move to the next level.

”With his rich background in business and a deep passion for rugby, he carries with him the correct credentials to meet our goals,” said Tshume.

”From a strategic point of view, we believe he is suitable to put our business on a sound financial footing, resulting in improved benefits for both amateur and professional rugby in South Africa. He has a huge task ahead of him and has the full support of the board of SA Rugby.”

Stones is a former business development director for Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Holdings, one of South Africa’s largest tyre manufacturers and distributors, and served as an executive director on the board of Engen Petroleum.

He earned a cum laude degree in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, which followed studies in chemical engineering from the same institution.

He has also completed the executive development programme at Wits Business School and studied further at the University of Stellenbosch in the field of applied ethics.

Stones is armed with more than fifteen years’ experience in senior management positions in the corporate world. — Sapa
