A 15-year-old boy wearing blood-spattered clothing, has been arrested in connection with the murder of 78-year-old Mpumalanga farmer Sarel Breedt, News24 reported on Monday.
The blood was thought to be that of Breedt, who was tied to a chair at his Honingsdraai farm and shot in the head on Thursday afternoon.
The police were searching for two other suspects, aged 15 and 16.
Breedt and his wife Ina (77) were having lunch outside their farmhouse, near Roossenekal, when they were overpowered.
The attackers tied Ina’s hands and feet and left her in the kitchen. She was not seriously injured.
Captain Manie van Zyl of Mpumalanga’s special investigation unit said the boy was caught red-handed while trying to break into a house in the town on Saturday.
He admitted his involvement in Breedt’s murder. The boy apparently pointed out tools and household items stolen from the Breedts.
Two suspects were apparently involved in the attack and killing, while a third kept watch at the farm gate.
The police found Breedt’s burnt-out bakkie at Sekhukhune, about 60km away from the farm, on Sunday.
It had been abandoned and probably set alight by the killers, said Van Zyl.
The bloodied clothing will be sent away for DNA testing. – Sapa
