Assault charges against People’s Poet dropped

Common assault charges against Mzwakhe Mbuli, a musician known as the People’s Poet, have been withdrawn in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reported on Tuesday.

The charge sheet did not specify the reasons for the withdrawal of the case.

However, the SABC has been informed that Mbuli’s wife did not want to continue with the matter.

Mbuli was arrested last month after he allegedly assaulted his wife, Doris, at their home in Naturena, southern Johannesburg.

Mbuli said he is now a free man.

”I feel very happy. The case is over. I think the whole issue was blown out of proportion. I call it a storm in a tea cup and I know that initially no one had intentions for me to be in prison. We have since reconciled,” said Mbuli. — Sapa
