The KwaZulu-Natal education authority on Monday warned principals at ”no-fee” schools to stop requesting fees from parents in exchange for their children’s reports.
Education provincial minister Ina Cronje said her department has been inundated with calls from parents complaining about it.
”Where it is brought to our attention, we will taken action against those principals,” she said in a statement.
”They are breaking the law and we will not tolerate it.”
Cronje said parents at 53% of the provincial education department’s schools did not have to pay fees.
”These 3 341 no-fee schools represent 42% of our learners, and parents whose children attend these schools do not have to apply for exemption of school fees.”
She appealed to affected parents to contact the department’s hotline, on 0800 204 353, report the matter to the district offices, fax details to 033 342 0275, or e-mail them to [email protected]. — Sapa
