Jo’burg Hospital probes use of expired medicines

The Johannesburg Hospital is investigating allegations that its pharmacists dispensed expired medicines, reported The Star on Tuesday.

Pharmacists at the hospital allegedly dispensed expired medicines to state patients, sticking labels over the expiry dates.

Johannesburg Hospital chief executive Sagie Pillay said he was appalled and had launched an urgent investigation.

”I am quite disturbed and surprised that this happened and we will take action against any individuals found to be guilty of this,” Pillay told the newspaper.

”We have done a very superficial investigation and it appears that our policies have been transgressed.”

Professor Peter Eagles of the South African Pharmacy Council said it was illegal to dispense expired medicines. He said after a certain age, medicines started to break down and their chemical compounds changed. – Sapa
