Modikwa platinum miners return to work

The strike at the Modikwa Platinum mine has been suspended, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Sunday.

”The workers will be back at work tomorrow [Monday]”, said chief negotiator Humbulani Tshikalange.

”We decided it would be better for workers to return to work,” he said.

The 3 000 miners have been on strike in opposition to the continuous operations (Conops) policy at the mine.

They claimed the policy contravened the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the Mines Act.

The mine, however, maintained that it had approval for Conops from the outset.

Two of the three disputed issues were resolved earlier in February — the provision of transport subsidies for workers, and the wage gap between white and black staff — in the dispute which began over racism allegations .

A no work, no pay policy applied to the miners during the strike.

The strike cost the mine an estimated R5-million per day in revenue and began on January 26.
