Liberian minister resigns over sex scandal

A Liberian Cabinet minister has resigned following the publication of pictures showing him having sex with two unidentified women, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf said.

Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Willis Knuckles tendered his resignation on Sunday, Johnson-Sirleaf said in statement carried on state radio on Tuesday.

“I accepted … with regret, the resignation of my acting chief of staff, Minister Willis Knuckles,” she said.

Sirleaf said Knuckles’ behaviour “while not illegal is improper and inappropriate for a public servant”.

Following the publication of the pictures in the Independent last week, Knuckles — without making an explicit admission of guilt — apologised to his wife, family, friends, church and the government.

“I have sworn to uphold high standards in my own behavior and have made it clear to my staff and others that they will be held accountable for the same standards,” said Johnson-Sirleaf.

Johnson-Sirleaf has championed a fight against the abuse of girls and women following the country’s brutal civil war. – AFP
