Eight people are feared drowned during floods in the Eastern Cape over the weekend, emergency services said on Tuesday. Captain John Fobian said the missing people were from the former Transkei, Queenstown and Grahamstown.
Four bodies have been recovered in the province since Monday.
Many people were also displaced due to the flooding of the Kat River, and roads and bridges were damaged. Fobian said the rain has since stopped.
Arrive Alive spokesperson Tshepo Machaea said roads were badly damaged and a number of accidents were reported.
The chief clerk at the provincial traffic centre, Kenneth Payi, said six people were killed and seven were injured in separate road accidents over the weekend.
For Wednesday, the South African Weather Service predicts partly cloudy and cool conditions over most of the Eastern Cape, but fine in the north. No rain is expected.
