A Cape Town man has invited the media to watch him try to cross a busy city street during afternoon rush hour on Wednesday.
Inok Zwane says he wants to highlight the dangers pedestrians face when they cross Buitengracht Street at the spot where two British tourists were killed when they were hit by a car last month.
”As a pedestrian, I frequently cross this death trap in the morning and afternoon,” he said.
Zwane, who planned to wear a lion mask and carry a loudhailer, said he would make his attempt at 5pm.
He said he wants the authorities to help minimise the risk to pedestrians by ”rectifying the defective green man, replacing missing knobs, providing pedestrian crossing lines” and other short-term measures.
He also wants to educate pedestrians to obey traffic rules by crossing at traffic lights rather than jaywalking. — Sapa
