Mandoza assault case postponed in court

An assault case against the kwaito star known to his fans as Mandoza was postponed in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, police said.

Glen Nonkonyana (30) laid a charge at the Kliptown police station on Monday, alleging that Mandoza had assaulted him, Constable Sefako Xaba said.

The man claimed that Mandoza assaulted him at a flat in Ferndale in Randburg late on Saturday. The two had just come from a nightclub.

Mandoza, whose real name is Mduduzi Tshabalala, was arrested on Monday night at a friend’s house in Pimville, Soweto. Xaba said the star was released after he was warned to appear in court on Tuesday.

The case was postponed to March 19 for further investigation.

Not a stranger to controversy, Mandoza was acquitted on drunken-driving charges at the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto two years ago.

He was present at the Randburg hotel where R&B singer Tsakani ”TK” Mhinga was found dead, apparently from a drug overdose, last year.

Mandoza was introduced to the kwaito scene with a group called Chiskop and later went solo and developed the popular ”Mandoza” brand. He has since sold a number of albums and won numerous awards.

He was born and bred in Zola, Soweto. — Sapa
