Former MP Tony Yengeni’s son Mandla was hijacked in Nyanga, outside Cape Town, on Friday night.
Western Cape police Inspector Bernadine Steyn said she was not allowed to confirm that the victim was Yengeni Jnr, saying only that a 23-year-old man from Milnerton and two male friends were on their way to visit a house in Hazeldean, Nyanga, when they were hijacked.
South African Broadcasting Corporation radio news, however, reported one of the hijack victims was Mandla Yengeni, son of the former African National Congress MP who was recently released on parole after serving a prison sentence for fraud.
A silver Mercedes Benz with four or five occupants stopped in front of Yengeni and his friends and approached the victims, pointing firearms at them. At gunpoint, they stole a black Volkswagen Golf and sped off. No shots were fired and nobody was injured.
The stolen vehicle was recovered shortly afterwards in Nyanga by police, who are still investigating. — Sapa
