‘Strong likelihood’ Metrobus strike could end

A strike by Johannesburg’s Metrobus drivers could end on Wednesday with both parties to the dispute optimistic that an agreement would be signed.

”There’s a strong likelihood that today we will be entering into an agreement,” said Johannesburg branch secretary of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu), Dumisani Langa.

A spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg, Gabu Tugwana, said the city was optimistic.

”I don’t have any reason not to trust their words because of the manner in which they left the meeting two days ago.”

While Langa would not divulge details of the deal, he said it was a ”compromise situation”, agreed to out of concern for the public.

”The public is suffering,” he said.

A meeting between the two sides was expected to take place at about noon.

Negotiations with the union ended on Tuesday afternoon and a formal agreement was handed over to Samwu, which undertook to respond by Wednesday. – Sapa
