Metro police officer found driving hijacked truck

A 40-year-old Johannesburg metro police officer and a 43-year-old man were arrested when they were found driving a hijacked goods truck in Gauteng on Thursday, said Vaal Rand police.

Captain William Mcera said the truck, carrying canned foods, was hijacked in Mpumalanga by three men on Wednesday morning.

The police flying squad located the truck, which had a tracking device, along the old Vereeniging road in De Deur, south of Johannesburg, on Thursday morning with three men in it.

”While trying to flee from the scene, one of the three men was shot in the leg. A second man was also arrested,” said Mcera.

Four cellphones were seized and the truck was impounded.

Both men are facing a stolen-vehicle charge. ”The third man is still to be apprehended,” said Mcera.

The wounded man received medical attention in detention and is expected appear with the second suspect, believed to be a member of the Johannesburg metro police, in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court soon. — Sapa
