Health and crime on agenda for Gauteng ANC

The state of the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng as well as three key challenges facing the province — education, health and crime — will be discussed at the party’s provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting in Germiston on Saturday.

PEC spokesperson and provincial minister of transport Ignatius Jacobs said President Thabo Mbeki had already received its report and would provide feedback to the committee on Saturday.

”He will provide feedback on how we are performing as a province and what we need to do to improve,” Jacobs said.

He said education, crime and health were three areas on which the province had placed extra emphasis. ”We have to make sure that all schools are functioning properly and that schooling in townships is taken to a higher level,” said Jacobs.

”With regard to health, we are focusing on access to healthcare, HIV-Aids, tuberculosis and more volunteers.”

Jacobs said the party would also look at strengthening community participation in the fight against crime. He said the party would ensure that community participation was broadened.

The party would also discuss ways in which it could reduce the incidence of violent crime against children.

”This is an opportunity for us as a province to report directly to the president. the president will later today [Saturday] give us feedback on whether we are succeeding in implementing the ANC manifesto,” said Jacobs.

He said the president will meet with the tripartite alliance — the ANC, the Congress of South African Trade Unions and the South African Communist Party — on Sunday to discuss its challenges. — Sapa
