New Afrikaans tabloid to hit the shelves in May

A Sunday tabloid aimed at the ”new, modern Afrikaner” is to be launched in May, its editor said on Tuesday.

Sondag’s Mike Vink said it would offer less sleaze than weekly Afrikaans tabloid Son.

This will entail, among others, a page three pin-up girl, who will not be topless.

”It’s not going to be sleazy, but a genuine Sunday newspaper with a sports, news and business section.”

Vink could not comment on expected circulation, but said the paper would be based in major metropolitan areas — Gauteng , most of the Western Cape, Port Elizabeth and East London in the Eastern Cape, the Free State, Northern Cape and Mpumalanga.

Sondag hoped to attract younger, modern South Africans who in the past did not read the broadsheet newspapers on offer.

”It will be very personality driven. We’re targeting younger-minded readers, about 50% coloured and 50% white Afrikaners.”

Sondag is slated to offer readers ”as take-away food”, news that is ”fast, filling and delicious”.

It will have a colourful visual impact and be designed for ”today’s newspaper reader”, who is exposed to numerous marketing messages and liked to ”scan and skim”, said Vink.

The 64-page paper will be launched on May 6 and will be part of the Media24 stable, which produces dailies Die Burger, Beeld, Volksblad, the Witness and Daily Sun; weekly papers Son and Soccer Laduma, and Sunday papers Rapport, City Press and Sunday Sun. — Sapa
