Second day of gunfire at Jo’burg taxi rank

Two shots were fired at Johannesburg’s busy Bree Street taxi rank on Tuesday, just a day after a taxi driver was shot and killed at the same rank, Gauteng police said.

Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini said the shooting took place at 8am. No one was wounded.

On Monday, a taxi driver was shot dead and four other people were wounded in a shoot-out at the rank.

Dlamini said no arrests have been made in connection with Monday’s shooting.

He said police conducted a crime-prevention operation and searched taxis at the rank on Tuesday afternoon. A commuter said a large contingent of police officers argued with taxi drivers at the taxi rank.

No taxis were allowed to leave the rank at noon.

Meanwhile, commuters were left stranded at Dobsonville in Soweto on Tuesday morning as taxis were not operating in the area.

Taxi drivers, protesting against the killing of their colleague on Monday at the Bree Street taxi rank, blockaded the intersection of Main Reef and Production roads in Roodepoort, said Johannesburg metro police.

Superintendent Edna Mamonyane said the protesters — members of the Dobsonville, Roodepoort, Leratong, Johannesburg Taxi Association (Dorljota) — had not indicated what their demands were and who they wanted to give their grievances to.

She said there was apparently a feud between Dorljota and a taxi association operating at Faraday taxi rank in the inner city. — Sapa
