The Springbok training rugby squad comprises the best 46 players available, even if some selectors did not agree, SA Rugby said on Monday.
”We accept that not all role players in the selection process were in agreement on some of the players selected,” the South African Rugby Union (Saru) said in a statement. ”Having said that, we are convinced that SA Rugby has named the best available 46 players for the training camp.”
Earlier in the day, selection chief Peter Jooste was quoted as saying that the inclusion of Stormers skipper Luke Watson was imposed by the rugby management.
Jooste told the Star that Saru president Oregan Hoskins; his deputy, Koos Basson; and vice-president Mike Stofile decided to include Watson.
The squad was named on Saturday.
Jooste said Springbok coach Jake White was also unhappy with the decision to include Watson.
”The presidency felt that Luke needed to be included, and without our knowledge, they added him to the group,” Jooste said. ”I’m not happy about the situation, because they’ve undermined us.”
Saru said on Monday it was satisfied with the process followed at the weekend when the training squad was announced. Proper procedures were followed.
The steps involve the following:
- The selection panel compiles a list of suitable players and reaches consensus on the composition of the national team.
- Once finalised, the convener of selectors forwards the team for final sign-off to the Saru presidency and the chairperson of the board of SA Rugby. The presidency comprises the president, deputy president and vice-president.
- Once signed off, the team selection is then ready for public announcement.
”Further, we have noted media statements attributed to members of the selection panel,” Saru said. ”As is the case with any team selection, it is extremely difficult to find absolute consensus on who should be in the team.” — Sapa
