Merkel lobbies more investment for Africa

German Chancellor Angela Merkel appealed on Monday to the heads of major corporations to invest more in Africa.

Africa had an amazing development potential, the chancellor told a meeting of German business leaders in Berlin. Firms that invest in Africa today, ”can reap the benefits tomorrow”, she said.

The meeting at the chancellor’s office discussed investment opportunities in Africa as well as good governance and ways to integrate the continent in the global economy.

Africa is one of the main items on the agenda of the Group of Eight (G8) summit of industrial nations that Germany is hosting in the resort of Heiligendamm from June 6 to 8.

Merkel is to address a meeting of the Africa Partnership Forum that opens in the German capital on Tuesday.

At the G8 summit, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Canada, Japan, the United States and Russia will discuss ways to increase the flow of effective investment to Africa and combat the spread of Aids. — Sapa-dpa
