Smit: Danger lies in the unknown

Springbok captain John Smit said on Friday the fact that so little is known of the touring England team makes them dangerous.

”We do not know much about this team,” Smit said, adding that all the talk had been about the Springboks lately.

”When there is something you’re not sure about, an unknown quantity, you have to prepare twice as hard for anything.”

Smit said every Test is important in the run-up to the World Cup.

”Test matches remain the same for both teams. You want to win, come whatever.”

According to Smit the short time the Boks had in preparing for Saturday’s Test in Bloemfontein should not have a negative effect on the team.

”This is the fourth season under Jake and we have fallen pretty smoothly into the old communication and things we had been using,” said Smit.

The South African captain was also pleased with how well the team had come together the past week. ”I was surprised how well the guys had gelled this time.”

Smit said a major challenge on Saturday will be to get the communication right on attack and defence. ”The question will be how accurate we are on defence,” added Smit.

”It is something you will have to spend some time on. Obviously, we will see how well the guys are communicating [on Saturday].” — Sapa
