Top detective Piet Byleveld says a bouncer has pledged a bounty of R500 000 to have him killed, Beeld newspaper reported.
Superintendent Byleveld said the plot to have him assassinated before he could testify against the bouncer was hatched in the Johannesburg prison.
Byleveld spoke to Beeld after he testified in the Randburg Regional Court on Monday in the bail application hearing of Paul Kietzmann (33).
Byleveld said the plan had been to shoot him on his way from his home to the court.
Kietzmann was however granted bail of R10 000 because the state’s case was ”not strong enough”.
Kietzmann shook his head in apparent disbelief when Byleveld levelled the accusations in court.
Said Byleveld: ”I am not scared, only careful.”
Byleveld is one of South Africa’s top detectives. He caught Donovan Moodley — the kidnapper and killer of Johannesburg student Leigh Matthews and apprehended Andrew Jordaan, the man accused of murdering seven-year-old Sheldean Human. – Sapa
