Sailor to sign for Dragons after drug ban

Disgraced former Wallaby Wendell Sailor will sign for Australian rugby league side St George Illawarra when his ban for drug use expires, it was reported Wednesday.

The Australian and Daily Telegraph newspapers reported that Sailor was poised to sign a contract with the National Rugby League outfit when his suspension ends next May.

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) terminated Sailor’s contract in July 2006 after he was found guilty of taking a banned substance.

The 32-year-old tested positive for cocaine after playing for the NSW Waratahs in a Super 14 match against the ACT Brumbies in April last year.

NRL chief executive David Gallop told the Australian that the league would not stand in the way of any club wanting to sign Sailor.

”Once he has served his suspension we would be agreeable to him playing again,” Gallop said. ”He’s done the crime and he’s done the time.”

Sailor was a top rugby league player with the Brisbane Broncos before switching to rugby union in November 2001.

He played for Queensland in State of Origin rugby league, played rugby union in the Super 12 and Super 14 competitions and for Australia in both codes.

Sailor scored 12 tries in 16 rugby league Tests and 13 tries in 37 internationals with the Wallabies. – Sapa-AFP
