Nigeria’s main opposition in ‘unity govt’ deal

Nigeria’s main opposition party said on Wednesday it had signed a deal with ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to participate in President Umaru Yar’Adua’s new government.

The agreement said the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) would work with Yar’Adua towards a ”national consensus in tackling the country’s problems”.

Yar’Adua hinted on Monday that he had initiated talks with some opposition parties to cooperate with the PDP to form a government of national unity.

The general elections on April 21 and 26 were widely criticised for falling short of international standards, with the ANPP joining other opposition parties in calling for a re-run.

Similar talks have begun with other opposition parties, including the Action Congress of former vice-president Atiku Abubakar. — AFP
