Truck plunges from Jo’burg highway on to road below

A man was killed and two were seriously injured when a truck plummeted from the M1 highway in Sandton on to a road beneath on Wednesday, Johannesburg Emergency Services said.

Spokesperson Malcolm Midgley said the driver of a Clover Dairy truck lost control on the bridge over South Road just before 4pm.

”The truck left its front axle on the bridge and the rest of it was on the ground on the road under the highway,” said Midgley.

”One person died instantly.”

Midgley said two workers from the truck were seriously injured and taken to Sunninghill Hospital.

”Nobody else was involved,” he said.

Spokesperson for paramedics ER24 Riana Beech said the three men were the only occupants of the truck when it crashed.

”The front tyres of the truck’s cab are on the bridge hanging over the side and the truck is down there [on South Road].

Beech said traffic in an easterly direction on South Road had been badly affected and metro police were directing cars.

Southbound traffic on the M1 was slow because of ”spectator value”, she said. — Sapa
