Standard Chartered named best bank in Africa

Standard Chartered Bank has been named the Best Emerging Markets Bank, one of the top global awards at the 2007 Euromoney Awards for Excellence. Standard Chartered also won a regional award for the Best Bank in Africa and a country award for the Best Bank in Ghana.

Standard Chartered’s group chief executive Peter Sands says that Standard Chartered aims to be the world’s best international bank, leading the way in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

“Through strong organic growth and disciplined acquisitions, the scale and performance of Standard Chartered has been transformed in recent years. We are proud that Euromoney has recognised our progress by making us Best Emerging Markets Bank.”

Sands said that the dynamics of the world economy are changing, as the global importance of Asia, Africa and the Middle East continues to grow.

“We are well placed to gain from the many changes that are under way around the globe and will continue our focus on creating shareholder value through our existing businesses and emerging opportunities.”

Standard Chartered also won the award for Best Bank in Africa.

Chris Low, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank South Africa, said that Africa is an important part of Standard Chartered history and future.

“It is a diverse continent and many of its economies are experiencing strong economic growth and are being transformed by high commodity and energy prices.”

Low noted that the strengthening trade links between Asia, particularly China, and Africa have received much attention in 2006.

“As an international bank with strong presences in both Asia and Africa, we are helping to fund this growing trade activity, and so it is particularly pleasing that we have won these awards at this time.

“Africa still faces huge challenges, and being a leading bank in Africa means more than running a successful business. We are supporting communities through our global campaigns to combat avoidable blindness, HIV/AIDS and malaria as well as deploying our people and expertise to encourage sustainable development.”
