A white powder found at a post office at Alberton, south of Johannesburg, earlier this month was not anthrax, police said on Wednesday.
”The powder tested negative [for anthrax],” said Inspector Juanita Kilian.
Eleven people were admitted to hospital on July 6 after they came in contact with an envelope containing a white powder.
Kilian said police had received a complaint from the post office at Jacqueline Mall in Randhart about the ”suspicious” parcel.
Eleven members of the post-office staff, police and public were ”decontaminated” at the scene and taken to hospital for observation and medication.
The parcel was sealed off by the bomb-disposal unit and taken to a police laboratory in Pretoria for forensic testing. It was not known where the parcel came from.
Kilian said everyone involved in the incident had been informed of the results. — Sapa
