Pirates fall to Spurs in tour soccer match

New club record signing Darren Bent opened his account for Tottenham Hotspur as the English club won a second match on their South Africa tour, beating Orlando Pirates 2-1 in Cape Town on Tuesday.

Bent, who joined Spurs for £16,5-million from Charlton, opened the scoring with a 12th minute strike, beating the offside trap to chip over goalkeeper Francis Chansa.

Wayne Routledge got the second for the English side six minutes from the end when he drilled home from close range after being left unmarked at the back post.

Pirates got a consolation penalty straight after but needed to take it three times before finding the net through Joseph Kamwendo.

Spurs goalkeeper Radek Cerny saved twice but moved forward off his line twice before the kick was taken.

Spurs play their final game on Saturday in Pretoria against the winner of Thursday’s clash between Pirates and arch rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
