ASA denies athletes absconded from Algiers

Athletics South Africa (ASA) has denied that athletes Louis van Zyl and Alwyn Myburgh absconded from Team SA at the All Africa Games in Algiers last week.

”We knew they were going to compete in Monaco but there is no question of them absconding from the South African team,” said ASA president Leonard Chuene on Friday.

Team SA were forced to withdraw from the men’s 400m relay final last Sunday in Algiers after the two had cited injuries.

They were, however, spotted competing at the International Association of Athletics Federations Super Grand Prix in Monaco over the same weekend.

Chuene was unable to explain the absence of the two athletes from the final.

”I do not know the dynamics of what happened in Algiers,” he said.

”I am waiting for a report from Sascoc [South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee] and then I will be able to comment further.”

Van Zyl went on to finish third in the 400m hurdles in Monaco with Myburgh behind his compatriot in fourth position. — Sapa
