Back to driving school for triple F1 champion Piquet

Old habits die hard and that’s certainly the case for former triple Formula One champion Nelson Piquet, who has lost his driving licence for repeated speeding offences.

As punishment the 54-year-old Brazilian has had to suffer the indignity of being sent back to school to brush up on the rules of the road.

Piquet has been spotted racing round the streets of Brasilia behind the wheel of a number of high-performance machines, including a BMW convertible and a customised roadster fitted out with a Porsche engine.

His lust for speed has obviously rubbed off on his wife, Viviane, whose licence has also been revoked for driving offences.

The Piquets attended the first of 30 hours of driving lessons in Brasilia on Monday, after which they will have to pass a test before having their licences reissued.

Piquet, whose son, Nelsonho, is also making a name for himself in Grand Prix racing, won the drivers’ world title in 1981, 1983 and 1987. — AFP
