A Benoni woman, abandoned on the Bapsfontein Road by her drunk husband, hitched a lift only to find to herself passing the wreckage of his bakkie with their seriously injured toddler son inside, Ekurhuleni metro police said early on Sunday.
The 43-year-old man tossed his 37-year-old wife out of the vehicle after an argument about the speed at which he was driving, said Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Inspector Mveli Nhlapo. They had been on their way home to Crystal Park, Benoni, from a visit to family in Bronkhorstspruit.
The woman stood at the side of the road as her husband sped off, drunk, with their three-year-old son still in the vehicle. A little while later, she was given a lift by another motorist but stopped the driver when they passed what she thought was the wreckage of her husband’s Toyota Hilux bakkie, said Nhlapo.
The man had lost control of the vehicle and it had rolled several times, he said. Both he and his son were seriously injured. They were taken to Temba Hospital, near Hammanskraal, but the man was transferred to Pretoria Academic Hospital when his condition worsened. The child was stable.
Nhlapo said a case of reckless or negligent driving was being investigated. — Sapa
