President’s bodyguard in court on murder charge

One of President Thabo Mbeki’s VIP protection unit bodyguards will appear in court on Thursday after allegedly shooting a man dead at a shebeen in June.

”He will appear in court again tomorrow [Thursday],” the Western Cape head of the independent complaints directorate, Thabo Leholo, said on Wednesday.

Timothy Sabata (35), a police sergeant, is to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town on charges of murder and attempted murder.

He is being charged with the murder of Reginald Mofemela as well as the attempted murder of Ncebekazi Booi, who was shot in the right arm on the night of the incident.

Leholo could not confirm if Sabata is still employed by the presidential protection services unit.

”I cannot confirm whether he has been dismissed or whether he’s receiving paid or unpaid leave,” said Leholo. — Sapa
